Commission to celebrate Assembly opening.

The composer Paul Mealor set a poem by Grahame Davies to music for a musical performance to celebrate the Royal opening of the Fifth National Assembly for Wales in The Senedd, Cardiff Bay, on June 7th.

Her Majesty The Queen opened the Assembly in the company of The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. The composition by Paul Mealor and Grahame Davies, entitled 'Wrth Ddwr a Thân / By Water and Fire', was performed by the National Youth Choir of Wales.

Wrth ddwr a thān. / By water and fire

The stream that leaves the mountain for the shore,
will neither halt nor hasten to depart,
but, knowing of the spring within the stone,
will meet the open sea with open heart.

Heb rwysg na rhemp na rhwystr
yr afon deithia 'mlaen.
Mae'r dwr sy'n llifo'n dawel
yn tarddu yn y maen.

The brightest daylight makes the darkest shade.
The sunset makes a pathway through the sea.
The flame that burns to ashes makes a home.
The fire that makes the chain can make the key.

Ar ddinas neu ddiffeithwch,
yr un goleuni glān.
Os arall ydyw'r aelwyd
yr un yw gwres y tān.

Grahame Davies
