National Eisteddfod sonnet prize

On August 2nd, Grahame Davies was awarded the prize in the sonnet competition at the National Eisteddfod of wales, held this year in Abergavenny.

The subject of the competition was 'Llidiart', ('Gate') and Grahame Davies won writing under the pseudonym, Porth y Llan.

The prize was presented by Ion Thomas in the Literature Pavilion.

In her adjudication, the judge, Siwan Rosser, said: "I was drawn by this sonnet from the first reading ... The prosody is skillful and the expression completely economical ... This poet's grasp of the sonnet form is masterly too: we have the questioning in the first octet, the reasoning in the sestet and then the epigrammatic couplet as a quiet, confident ending to a thrilling sonnet. Excellent. ... Porth y Llan's poem made the greatest, surest impression on me. This is a sonnet that can be returned to time and again without tiring of the wealth of its fluent expression and its unobtrusive wisdom.'
