Chairing Book of the Year judges.

Grahame Davies chaired the panel of judges for the Welsh-language Book of the Year Award this year, which was organised by Academi. His fellow judges were Lyn Ebenezer and Dr Mererid Puw Davies. It was quite a task, with over 50 books to consider. This year, for the first time, there was a long list of 10 books. That was announced in March. There's an article in Welsh on it here. Then the shortlist of 3 was announced at the Hay on Wye Festival of Literature on May 31. There's an article in Welsh about the three shortlisted books here. The winner was announced at a special event at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff on June 17. The prize went to Jerry Hunter for his excellent study of the Welsh in the American Civil War, Llwch Cenhedloedd. The story's in Welsh here. The two runners-up, both of which were also worthy of the first prize, were Jason Walford Davies's masterly study of the Welsh-language influences on the poet R.S.Thomas, Gororau'r Iaith, and Owen Martell's marvellous novel, Dyn yr Eiliad.
